Patricia Metzler was asleep when her Katy, Texas, the house went up in flames at 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13. She awoke to see Marley kissing her face nonstop.
“He simply wouldn’t stop,” Metzler, who characterized Marley’s conduct as out of the ordinary. “Until I arose, he licked my face, growled, pawed, and tugged at my hair. The home was engulfed in flames as I opened the door.”
Metzler grabbed up her tiny Chihuahua Bella, and they followed Marley out the front door via a small hole in the flames.
“A lot of it is lost to me. As soon as the firefighters arrived, I woke up and realized I had passed out on the grass outside “Metzler comes to mind. ‘They were always talking about how Marley rescued me and he wouldn’t leave my side.'” None of the three characters were hurt in the blaze.
The Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department’s Public Information Officer, Simon VanDyk, explains that “something electrical in or near the microwave” was the cause of the fire. Whether or whether the smoke alarms in the house were functioning at the time of the fire is unknown at this time.
“The pets of numerous homeowners have alerted us to the fact that their alarm systems are outdated and no longer effective. This has happened far too often. If a gadget is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced “cautiously advises VanDyk. “Dogs can be helpful, but it would be ideal if we had functional smoke detectors.”
Fortunately, Metzler’s three kids were not at home at the time of the fire, so she lost nothing. She is going through a divorce and is fighting breast cancer at the same time. As Metzler puts it, “Marley and Bella are my life.” “I rescued him first, and now he’s rescuing me,” he says.
Marley was adopted from Katy’s animal rescue CAP five years ago by Metzler and her soon-to-be ex-husband. Metzler had reservations about obtaining a dog at the time since Marley was still a puppy. Since then, Marley has been at her side, she claims since they paid the adoption expenses with money they’d saved up over the years. She describes him as “very protective” of her and her children.
Marley is a big fan of country music, according to Metzler. Marley used to bark until Patricia turned on his favorite music before they lost their Alexa in the fire. “Marley is a major Rascal Flats fan,” adds Metzler, who chuckles at recollections of Marley entertaining home visitors with Rascal Flats songs.
Homemade goodies, hikes, and filthy water are among Marley’s favorite pastimes as well. As a matter of fact, “we may go on a stroll and Marley will seek out and want to play in each single, disgusting puddle,” adds Metzler. In the end, Marley is a fan of bath time, as well!
At the time of the incident, Metzler had just moved into her new home, and it isn’t clear whether her smoke alarms went off or were working.
Home safety assessments are offered free of charge by Harris County Emergency Service District 48. VanDyk notes that as part of the assessment, “we check your smoke alarms and make sure they are in the appropriate spot and are operating properly”.
