The combination of dogs and motorbikes is not a novel thought. How many fine guys have you seen with their ears flapping in the breeze as they ride in the luxury of a sidecar on a warm summer afternoon?
If your response to that question is zero, you should go out more often. Because Michael Fiala’s motorcycle was a Kawasaki Ninja, he chose to approach things a bit differently, as there was no sidecar to transport Sox the husky on the voyage. So, why not use the pillion seat instead?
After graduating from university a few years ago, Michael Fiala made the decision to sell everything he had with the exception of his motorbike, and go to Hawaii. His father gave him a dog to accompany him on his lonely journey, a fluffy young husky called Sox, to keep him company.
When Fiala arrived in Hawaii, he had to find out how to transport his dog around the island with just a motorbike. Because Fiala is a certified animal behaviorist, biologist, and dog trainer, she was ready for the task.
He progressively adapted his adventure companion to riding on the pillion of his Ninja until Sox the dog grew used to riding on his Ninja.
After six years of riding the highways of Hawaii with his dog on the saddle, Fiala decided to return to the mainland in order to complete his dream of seeing all 50 states, all national parks, and all Major League Baseball stadiums in the United States and Canada.
He traded in his Ninja for a Concours 14 and returned to the mainland, where he would begin his epic journey. Of course, he’ll be traveling with Sox in tow.
That was more than a year and a half ago now. The couple has already logged more than 60,000 miles on the Kawasaki, as well as visits to 35 states and 21 national parks on the motorcycle.
A little open-face helmet and goggles are provided by Fiala in order to keep fellow travelers Sox safe over the course of their adventure.
For one thing, it’s difficult not to conclude that the expression on the dog’s face is one of sheer happiness. You’d be forgiven for thinking he’s smiling…
And when they’ve visited all 50 states, national parks, and baseball stadiums, what do they do with their time? Fiala has lofty dreams, and the next item on her to-do list is to travel to all seven continents.
He just began recording “Sox and Michael’s” exploits on Instagram a few months ago, but it’s well worth a look if you’re looking for some lighthearted entertainment. Pictures of husky-wearing goggles would instantly brighten any gloomy day.
