In Feltham, west London, on Saturday, a dog walker was startled when he discovered the puppy, which was supposed to be just a few weeks old.
The black and brown-colored pup was found in a transparent plastic box in a green spot on Hatton Road, “chilling cold” and in critical condition. He had been abandoned in the box for many days.
The helpless animal was transported to the veterinarians, who attempted to rescue him but were unable.
The RSPCA has opened an inquiry and is calling anybody who may have the knowledge to come forward and share it with them.
In a statement, RSPCA Inspector Nicole Broster said, “This is a very unfortunate situation, and it broke my heart to learn that such a little puppy had been abandoned all alone at a time when he was in such dire need of assistance.”
“When he was discovered by a walker, he was described as ‘chilling cold,’ and when he was evaluated by veterinarians, it was evident that he was emaciated and suffering from conjunctivitis that was so bad that he was unable to open his eyes.
“He was also so weak and depressed that he was unable to eat or walk more than a few paces before passing out.
‘Abandoning any animal is cruel and entirely needless, and we have no way of knowing how long the puppy had been left outside in the cold and bushes, subject to all kinds of danger.’
“It’s conceivable that someone discarded him because he’s in such bad health, or that he’s a by-product of the brutal puppy mill industry.
The fact that someone placed him in those bushes and then walked away is beyond comprehension.”
Recently, the puppy was taken from a local veterinarian to the RSPCA Finsbury Park Hospital, where he is now recovering.
Despite all efforts to rescue him, he did not react to therapy and was put to sleep to put an end to his agonizing pain and suffering.
“I’d want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the individual who discovered the dog, transported him to a veterinarian, and provided ongoing care for him,” Ms. Broster said.
