As a truck driver in Georgia who has a strong bond with pit bulls, Mario Rodriguez was heartbroken when his wife informed him that their two-year-old dog Hickory had been placed on the death list at the New York Animal Care Center…
He did not hesitate for a second and saved the dog’s life…
“I told my wife that I had to go after him,” Mario said. “I’m on a mission to rescue this dog,” says the author.
Mario decided to speak with his boss, who assisted him in planning a way to New York in order to meet Hickory. He made a phone call to the shelter to let them know that he was going to pick up the puppy and that he was on his way.
I traveled through traffic and contacted the shelter every day for three days before they were able to track down my phone number,” Mario said. “He’s still here, Mario,” they exclaimed. “He’s still here, Mario!” they exclaimed.
It took him six exhausting days to eventually get to know his new canine companion.
“I parked my vehicle and dashed inside the shelter,” Mario said. Immediately upon seeing me, Hickory ran out to greet me, and greet me he did.
“That’s it, my buddy!” I said…
“We’re on our way home!” He was excited and began wagging his tail like crazy. “He sprang on me and licked the side of my face right away.”
Without a question, the bond that developed between them was amazing, and it was fate that brought them together…
“He appeared to be waiting for me,” Mario said in an interview with The Dodo. It was very bizarre. We were able to establish an immediate relationship. Never in my life have I had a dog get so connected to me as rapidly as I have with this one.”
Mario finished filling out all of the adoption papers, and they were on their way back to the house in no time; the dog was upset and leaped into the vehicle…
At first, Hickory seemed to be a bit hesitant around his new pit bull brothers, Cooper and Angel, but within a few minutes, they began running and playing with each other.․․
The infection in Hickory’s lungs is rather moderate, and he has already begun medication to alleviate it. He is really content in his new residence…
Mario, who not only rescued Hickory’s life, but also has plans to open his own pit bull rescue center after leaving his truck driving profession in approximately five to six years, when he will have retired from the road.
