After saving a dog from a burning building, an Iowa fireman now has a new canine buddy.․․
It all began when Malcolm Cortner was sent to an apartment fire in Des Moines at the end of September, according to information released on the city’s official Facebook page on Friday.
When he arrived, he and the other first responders discovered a huge 16-month-old mastiff trapped within the blazing structure.․․
The pup was saved by Cortner, who was able to drag it to safety, where it was given oxygen by rescue personnel.
An animal control officer told the dog’s owner that their pet would need to undergo “possibly costly treatment” or risk euthanasia when Animal Care and Control arrived on the scene, according to the Facebook post.․․
When the dog’s owner decided to put it down, Cortner stepped in and said he would adopt the dog so he could pay for its medical bills.․․
Cortner’s plea was accepted, according to municipal authorities, and care for the dog — now affectionately known as George — has since been provided.
After announcing the dog’s adoption and posting two images of him on Facebook, local authorities also shared details about George’s rescue and his happy and healthy state.․․
Congratulations to Firefighter Cortner, who has a new best buddy, George,” said the message.․․
