Over 50 dogs have been given a second chance at life by a group of quick-thinking rescuers, enabling them to enjoy better lives.
The animal rescue organization Dog Meat-Free Indonesia said that police officers and animal rescuers from Dog Meat-Free Indonesia apprehended a transport van carrying 53 dogs who were on their way to an illegal butcher in Indonesia, according to Four Paws.
The pups were found tied up in sacks with their mouths bound together when their rescuers arrived. According to a news release, the vast majority of the dogs were underweight and under the age of one when they were rescued.
A guy believed to have been engaged in the dog meat trade for more than 20 years was apprehended during the raid, which was Indonesia’s first large-scale operation against an illegal canine slaughterhouse.
The dogs were removed from the van and freed from their bindings by Dog Meat-Free Indonesia rescuers, who then provided all of the canines with emergency veterinary treatment before taking them to a temporary shelter. One of the 53 dogs died before it could be sent to the shelter, which was a heartbreaking turn of events. The animals who have survived will be housed at the shelter until they have healed from the abuse and neglect that they have experienced throughout their lives.
It is hoped that this rescue would serve as a “watershed moment” in Indonesia’s underground dog meat trade, which is supported by FOUR PAWS, a non-profit organization devoted to putting an end to animal cruelty across the globe.
“Our observations of the heinous and unlawful activities committed by the Sukoharjo authorities, as well as the positive efforts taken by the local authorities, must be recognized as a watershed moment in the fight against this outlawed, archaic, and inhumane trade.
There is only one positive thing we can take from this horrific situation: law enforcement and advocacy groups are working together to put a stop to the illegal drug trade. The ability for merchants to conceal their operations will be gone in the very near future, making it difficult for them to carry on with their illicit enterprises.”
It was announced in a press release by Dr. Karanvir Kukreja, director of public campaigns for FOUR PAWS International’s Ending the Dog and Cat Meat Trade campaign in Southeast Asia, who made the remark.
A dog meat rescue operation carried out by FOUR PAWS earlier this year resulted in the successful rescue of over 60 puppies who were on their way to an illegal dog meat butcher in Cambodia during the month of February.
As of right now, thirty of the rescued pups are recovering in FOUR PAWS’ Cambodian shelter, which will soon be expanded thanks to a generous grant from Pawthereum, a nonprofit organization that operates on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Giving Tuesday (Nov. 30), a day devoted to charity giving, will see Pawthereum match donations made to FOUR PAWS up to a total of $50,000 in matching funds. You may discover more about FOUR PAWS by visiting their website, as well as how you can assist them in their endeavors.
