A severely matted dog that had spent the last two years living under a bed receives a life-changing transformation… Watch the full video…

Lionheart has earned the right to be called such.

This small puppy has persevered in the face of enormous hurdles and is now being rewarded for his efforts. Lionheart was surrendered to the Richmond SPCA in April, according to the Virginia animal shelter’s website. It was revealed to shelter employees that the dog, who came matted and coated in excrement and urine, was 7 years old and had spent the last two years living beneath a bed…

It didn’t take long for the Richmond SPCA to go to work, giving Lionheart with the attention and medical treatment that he’d been denied for years. Getting rid of all of the uncomfortable, nasty mats that were covering the dog’s coat and hindering him from properly walking and eating was the first step to take.

Staff at the shelter spent three hours gently removing pounds of hair off Lionheart until the adorable dog below all of the grime could be seen for the first time.

With his superfluous hair removed, Lionheart was examined by the doctors at the Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, which is part of the shelter. The physicians discovered that the puppy had suffered as a result of years of mistreatment.

When we finished shaving Lionheart and trimming his nails, we took a look at the damage that had been done to him during the years of neglect. Among the many things we did for Lionheart were cure the ulcers on his skin, do a dental to rid him of horrendous, untreated, periodontal disease, neuter him, and treat him for internal parasites, according to the shelter in a news statement about the imposing canine.

Because of Lionheart’s spirit and the dedicated care provided by the Richmond SPCA, the dog was able to recuperate from his years of being confined beneath the mattress. Lionheart was adopted by his permanent home three months after coming to the Richmond SPCA. He was a cheerful, lively, and healthy dog when he left the shelter.
