More than 50 dogs were saved from a truck that was on its way to an illegal slaughterhouse in Sukoharjo, Indonesia, just moments before they were cruelly slaughtered for their flesh. The pups were rescued only moments before they were to be slaughtered.
It was impossible to look away from the dogs, who were tied up in sacks and had their muzzles knotted tightly with ropes or wires, and their eyes were wide open with fright.
A collaborative effort between local police and rescuers from the Dog Meat-Free Indonesia (DMFI) alliance and the Humane Society of the United States was launched to save the canines.
When the dogs were finally released from their restraints and allowed to settle down, it was clear that they were all quite young — all of them were less than a year old — and severely malnourished as a result of the ten-hour nightmarish voyage they had through, according to Four Paws.
Following emergency medical treatment, the dogs were brought to a temporary shelter, where they will continue to get care and be nursed back to health until they are healthy.
There will be a large number of dogs that were stolen pets returned to their homes, and the remainder will be placed up for adoption.
The guy who was suspected of being a dog meat seller on the Indonesian island of Java was apprehended and charged with animal cruelty.
He is regarded to be at the heart of the dog meat trade, and he has a history of participation in the trade that dates back more than two decades. He also oversees the transportation of hundreds of dogs for slaughter each month, with an average of 30 dogs being slaughtered each day.
Tarjono Sapto Nugroho, Head of Crime Investigation of Sukoharjo Police, stated in a statement to Four Paws International that the department receives a large number of reports concerning illicit dog meat sellers’ activities.
“People do not want this kind of commerce or killing to take place in their neighborhoods. “Dogs are buddies, not food,” says the author.
Nugroho notes that, although some people regard dog meat eating to be a cultural tradition, the commerce in dog meat is unlawful and severely banned by Islamic law.
It is the intention of the Sukoharjo Police Department to continue to assist the Central Javan administration in its efforts to eliminate the dog meat-eating culture and commerce in the region.
