The Toledo Area Humane Society in Ohio wanted to do something unique to prepare their shelter canines for adoption into permanent homes. They transformed an office space into a living room and dubbed it “The Real Life Room.”
The shelter’s employees converted one of their offices into a cozy, tiny leisure area for the dogs, replete with a soft chair, a rug, pillows, a kennel, a floor lamp, and a TV. They also put a personal touch to the wall with a plaque that reads, “All You Need is Love and a Dog.” The only thing most of the pets lacked was a loving family.
“Jake our extended stay dog putting our Real-Life room to use,” the shelter commented alongside a photo of one of their canines on Facebook. He’s obviously enjoying the peace and quiet.”
The doggy living area allowed the canines to get away from the often noisy and crowded kennels and unwind in a relaxing environment. In a typical family home scenario, a shelter volunteer would sit with the dogs, making them feel more at comfortable.
Because the Real Life Room allowed canines to de-stress, many of them let their genuine personalities shine through, which aided in the adoption of several pets. It was exactly what the shelter had hoped for!
Jake was one of the dogs who found his forever home not long after being featured in the room photo.
