Abbey, the dog who played “Sam” and co-starred with Will Smith in the apocalyptic zombie sci-fi action film “I Am Legend,” has turned 13! Abbey is still doing well ten years after the smash film was released in theaters!
She is currently residing with Steve Berens and his family, her trainer.
“She’s older already, and she doesn’t hear much. “But she’s still kicking, and she enjoys a ball and a bone,” Steve explained.
“When you work with a lot of actors, they’re not that interested in the animal — a lot of actors see it as something that the audience will look at instead of them.” Will, on the other hand, was not at all like that. He realized this was his co-star, and he really dug it and got into it. “I believe she liked him, and that made a difference.”
Will Smith’s family pet was killed in an automobile accident when he was a boy, and he vowed never to keep another dog again as a result of his sadness. Abbey, on the other hand, changed his mind, and he even asked Steve Berens if he could keep her!
“I was pleading with him. I was like, please give me Abbey. Please, please, please give her to me. But, you know, she now has her own family, so it was just another one of those Hollywood romances.”
