Imagine coming home to discover a fearful, shivering dog waiting for you. On January 13, 2018, a man in upstate New York experienced exactly that.
Penny came up at the door of a decent citizen on January 13. She appeared to have been abandoned on the side of the road. It was a cold night, and it was presumed she had come to the door in search of food and comfort.
She was taken to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA after animal control was contacted. She had clearly been neglected and was in need of medical assistance. The medical team at CGHS/SPCA discovered that she had untreated demodectic mange, as well as secondary skin infections and lacerations on her face and neck.
CGHS/SPCA, in collaboration with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, issued a news release containing a photo of Penny in the hopes of locating the owner. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Paul C. Bull, 47, of Coxsackie, within 24 hours. Mr. Bull faces a year in prison and/or a $1,000 fine if convicted.
Penny has been undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation for two months and has made remarkable medical progress. This Saturday, she will be reunited with her new adopted family.
“Many thanks to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for their thoroughness on this case, as well as to our shelter medical team, who worked tirelessly to appropriately treat Penny.” “I can’t express how grateful we are to everyone who contributed to her miraculous recovery,” said Ron Perez, President/CEO of the Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA.
“The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is thrilled that Penny is coming home and being given a second opportunity at the life she’s deserved all along,” said Sheriff Greg Seeley.
While at the shelter, Sweet Penny had some wonderful caregivers, and many people inquired about adopting her.
Penny went home with her forever family on March 10 – a couple who are certain they can provide her with the attention and affection she needs.
