Service dogs can be excellent companions for those in need. They can not only provide medical and mental assistance, but they also make wonderful, loyal pets who will be by your side when you need them the most.

So, after one devoted service dog remained by his owner’s side throughout graduate school, the university thought he was deserving of a big award. This student’s graduation story went viral.

Brittany Hawley, 25, has a golden retriever named Griffin as her assistance dog in the story. Hawley has used a wheelchair since she was a kid when she discovered she has reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. Her dog also graduated from university while she was working on her postgraduate program!

When Hawley was about to graduate in 2018, she realized she wouldn’t have been able to finish her master’s degree without Griffin’s assistance. So it was only natural, she reasoned, that Griffin is recognized for his assistance as well.

After reaching out to her university, they decided not only to offer Griffin an honorary degree but also to include him in the ceremony! Griffin’s participation in the event, of course, excited everybody in attendance.

Hawley earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy from Clarkson University in New York. Hawley and Griffin both got diplomas during the graduation ceremony. This young man was even given a speech in his honor.

Griffin displayed unwavering focus, exceptional effort, and zealous enthusiasm for Hawley’s success.

What a lovely tribute to this devoted service dog! That degree was unquestionably obtained by him!
