When Rescue Dogs Rock NYC took in a seriously ill Border collie named Simon, they had no idea if he would survive.
He was in pain as scabies increased, and the fever-induced by the infection led him to quiver violently. He was accused of being the victim of blatant abuse and neglect by the shelter.
Simon beat death after a few days of uncertainty, surprising everyone in the hospital. He was still in agony, but he was upbeat because his health was improving.
But when he met the shelter’s new rescue, a 4-month-old Boxer mix named Sammie, his heart shivered once more.
Sammie’s owner had spray-painted him, shot him in the head, and then dragged him under a car to death.
However, when the unfortunate animal “wouldn’t die soon,” his owner took him to the vet to “complete the job.”
The shelter quickly recognized the situation and saved Sammie from his owner’s wicked grasp.
Sammie underwent emergency surgery, but he was still on the verge of dying. When Simon first saw Sammie, he knew the dog had gone through hell, just like him. He decided to be the ray of sunlight that brought Sammie back to life!
Simon approached Sammie as he writhed in agony on the X-ray table and amorously gripped his paws. He soothed him with nuzzles and kisses, assuring him that the agony will fade gradually. This one gesture of empathy was enough to inspire Sammie to pursue the desire to survive!
Over the course of several weeks, Simon remained by Sammie’s side and guided him through his difficult times. Simon and Sammie both recovered successfully, albeit they will be scarred for the rest of their lives.
Despite all of the trauma they’ve gone through, this battered couple has formed a beautiful connection!
