CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) rescuers in Johannesburg, South Africa, were approached to rescue Belle from a terribly neglected household. The unfortunate young dog, a cross between a lab and a hound, had been a willing host to the ticks for a long time and was on the verge of death. She was weak, weak, and infected with tick fever.

Ticks are a frequent problem in many parts of the world, but Belle’s infestation was amazing.
She was covered in ticks all over her body. They’d crusted over the outsides of her beautiful floppy ears and stuffed themselves inside. They’d clung to her lashes and made it difficult for her to see. The ticks had been feeding on Belle for so long that they had gotten bloated with her blood, reliant on the blood vessels in her delicate, thin-skinned areas to survive.
The medical staff was unable to eradicate the ticks since the infestation was so severe. Belle had already lost a lot of blood to the parasites that removing them one by one would kill her.
Instead, they administered potent anti-parasitic medications to her.
After being paralyzed by the medicine, the ticks began to detach and fall off a few days after her intensive therapy began. When ticks began their mass flight, clinic professionals treated the skin problems they left behind. Because Belle was severely malnourished, she was put on a special diet to provide her with much-needed vitamins.
Her health progressively improved. Her fur grew back over the portions of her skin that the ticks had left exposed or discolored, and her coat became shiny and smooth. She blossomed into a healthy, happy dog, and her true character began to emerge as a result of the CLAW staff’s dedicated care and love.
Her story went viral, and she won the hearts of people all across the world.
There was, however, little excitement for adopting her. Isn’t it hard to believe?
There was, in fact, just one applicant: Hannah Claire van Collier. When Hannah decided to adopt Belle, she anticipated a lot more competition. Instead, it looked that she and Belle were fated to be together.
“Belle literally grabbed Hannah’s heart within seconds of meeting,” CLAW’s Facebook page says, “and it has been a match made in heaven.” Belle got her bum in the butter and hasn’t looked back since, getting better by the day!”
