What everyone thought was a serious house invasion turns out to be nothing more than a humorous (and harmless) joke that had even the deputies deployed to investigate laughing. All after they discovered the invader was actually the owner’s dog!
Officers from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office in California went to the scene after an 18-year-old male contacted 911 to report that someone was trying to break into his house. As it turned out, the guy was alone at home when his dogs began to bark incessantly. Then he began to hear really strange noises coming from above, so he took all of the dogs – except one – and took them to hide before phoning the police.
“We got out and he’s all scared, believing there’s a prowler in his house,” Spencer Crum, a spokesperson for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, told The Dodo. “Several deputies came and proceeded inside the residence, while others remained outside to investigate the exterior.”
For a few minutes, the officers thoroughly investigated the residence, but there was no trace of a break-in, let alone an intruder. But they were just about to find out who the real culprit was!
Spencer Crum stated, “One of the deputies outside the home heard this scratching noise.” “He cast his light around the home and noticed this dog putting his head out a skylight on the roof.” “At that point, we dropped all tactics and died laughing,” the deputy recalled.
They soon realized what had happened. The enormous dog – a Great Dane – walked upstairs to explore, but then he started making a lot of noise, which startled the young owner and his companion canines. In fact, the owner was so terrified that he omitted to account for the ‘small’ Great Dane when he and the other dogs went into hiding. The Great Dane may have wanted to get some fresh air, so he opened the window using his long legs.
“Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a reported prowler at a residence.” “They arrived and promptly apprehended the perpetrator as he attempted to flee the property through an unlocked skylight,” the department posted on Facebook. Officer Crum, who has seen a lot, was taken aback by the conclusion.
“I’ve been doing this job for 25 years, and I’ve had a lot of unusual calls,” he explained. “How can a dog be mistaken for a robber in his own house?” That’s quite unusual.”
