The Fearful Dog Who Turned to ‘Stone’ Overcomes Her Fears And Discovers…

“Petra is hungry, in pain, and fatigued — she can hardly move.” “She’s been fighting just too many things for far too long,” Save A Greek Stray said when they first saw her and decided to save her.

The canine had been sleeping on the streets of Oropos, a rural district of Athens, Greece for several years. The years, however, had taken their toll, and her body was riddled with illnesses and sickness…

Because her skin was scaled and hard from mange, they named her Petra, which means “stone” in Greek. They posted her images on social media, drawing the attention of Valia Orfanidou, a seasoned canine rehabilitator.

“Even underweight and with her face transformed into stone by mange, the way she gazed right into the camera made her look magnificent,” she said of the dog she had never met. “It’s as though she’s seeing into your soul.”

Valia’s fondness for Petra prompted her to seek out to the rescue and schedule a visit.

“I wasn’t a volunteer at the shelter back then, but I looked forward to seeing updates on her every week,” Valia wrote. “I finally met her a few months after she had entirely recovered from everything bad with her – mange, leishmaniasis, Ehrlichia…you call it.”

Valia had previously rescued dogs deemed “hopeless,” but she quickly understood that Petra had a bigger problem than all her health concerns: her inability to trust anybody.

“Despite the love and attention she was getting for months, she was still too afraid to leave her cage and would scream at other dogs,” Valia adds.

Valia began collaborating with her. “The first time I walked her, it took us an hour to cover only a few meters from her cage,” she explained. “Every week, she became more eager to go on a walk, and she began to tolerate affection and the company of other dogs.”

“She never took a step back until she got to where she is now,” Valia explained.

Petra began to open her heart with great patience and time.

According to Valia, the dog who looked like stone and had a stone heart has evolved into a “happy, gregarious, friendly, ideal dog.” There’s only one thing missing: a lifelong home. Hopefully, he will be adopted soon!
