To show they were born to be with each other, a street dog chased a marine for 70 miles…

Dogs and humans create close friendship relationships all around the world. When given the opportunity, dogs’ genuine noble nature shines through, from warm couches to distant battlefields.

A homeless dog waited for someone to adore him even in the war-torn country of Iraq. He’d been wounded, had his ears cut off, and had no identity, yet he remained hopeful that someone would come to his aid.

That someone arrived one day with three Humvees lumbering to a halt in the desert beside the dog. Major Brian Dennis, a Marine, observed the dog and approached him. He quickly gained the dog’s trust and began sharing his meals with the hungry pup, whom he named Nubs.

“He really just jumped up and I began to play with him as soon as I met him,” Dennis explained. “When we first met, he just kind of turned over.” I began rubbing his stomach. My entire crew really kind of bonded with him as early as we met him.”

Nubs’ wounds were healed, and he had a warm bed, nourishment, and love for the first time in his life. He started to like the Major, but fate had different intentions for the new buddies. Major Dennis had to go to a new location, and Nubs was not permitted to accompany him.

The incident did not deter the Nubs from pursuing his Marine. Despite the bitter cold, Nubs pursued his Humvee for 75 miles across the desert, desperate to stay with Major Dennis.

“That’s the major question. “No one knows how he accomplished it,” Dennis explained. “But he saw where we were going and just set off in that direction; 70, 75 miles or so is how far he ended up walking before he found our crew.” When he walked up, it was the weirdest thing. It was simply incredible.”

“One of my Marines came running in and said, ‘You won’t believe who’s outside.’ I assumed he was referring to a specific person. ‘Who’s outside?’ I ask. ‘Nubs is outside,’ he says.

Despite the prohibition barring pets, the Marines constructed a dog house for Nubs and kept him secure in it. Everything was fine until someone complained to the chain of command, and Major Dennis was told to get rid of the nubs.

He began making plans to ship Nubs to San Diego, unable to part with the brave dog. The idea was costly and complex to carry out, but with the support of their fellow Marines, they began accumulating funds and connecting with people who could assist.

Nubs flew to his new forever home in March 2008. Dennis followed him a month later. Nubs have now died away, but his incredible narrative of the significance of saving these dogs’ lives has inspired a book, Nubs, the True Story of a Mutt, Marine, and a Miracle.

Because she knows nobody really loves her, a sick three-legged dog sleeps in a shoebox in the rain…
