Bandit was a jail canine trained by the Gwinnett Jail Dog Program’s Inmate Handlers Program, but that isn’t what makes him so exceptional.

Bandit has been adopted and returned to jail four times, but not for being a nasty dog. The adorable puppy is paralyzed from the waist down and must rely on a wheelchair to move around. Despite their best efforts, his prior adoptive families were ill-equipped to offer the care he required.

So the gorgeous puppy with the nicest face was imprisoned for five and a half years, waiting for the perfect family to adopt him. Finally, that family found him on a website and kept returning to look at him, knowing exactly what his particular requirements would be and wondering if they could meet them.

Darrell Rider, who has been disabled since birth and uses a wheelchair, was well understood by the Rider family. Finally, they felt that the older dog would be a good match because they had lived his life and understood exactly what kind of particular care he would require.

“If Bandit were human, he’d look like me.”

“When you go through what I went through growing up, life isn’t simple, but you just have to keep moving forward.” “From what I’d read about Bandit and the movies we’d seen, he seemed to have the same mindset as I had,” Darrell explained.

WSB-TV was there to cover the moment Darrell and Sue went to pick up Bandit from the jail. They discussed their initial reservations about adopting Bandit before deciding to give him a lifelong home.

“It is something that will motivate Darrell and let Bandit know he isn’t alone out there,” Sue said.

Despite the fact that it was a wonderful day for Bandit and his new family, there was some grief in the air. The adorable dog’s company will be missed by his correctional handlers. Tredo, his most recent handler, revealed:

“I’ve been trying to love him more since I found out he’s being adopted. That’s just my friend.”

Bandit came out of the jail for the last time, accompanied by his new mother and father. And there was more surprise in store for him…when he arrived at his new home, he’d meet his new fur siblings. What a wonderful rescue story.
