It took a while for the neglected pooch to acclimatize to his new haircut!
The groomer who trimmed Lazarus’ 35-pound mass of thick fur felt like he was resurrecting him.
His prior owner, who is terminally ill, cruelly neglected him, and he had never been groomed, according to rescuers.
“His fur was matting to his body,” Amanda Charsha-Lindsey of Big Fluffy Dog Rescue, who is now adopting the Great Pyrenees in Virginia, explains. “At that time, brushing and cutting are no longer options, and the shears must be used.” “There were literally mats on top of mats on top of mats.”
“I knew it was a fresh feeling he hadn’t felt before, and he seemed unsure,” Charsha-Lindsey tells PEOPLE. “He took his first few steps without his coat after a few goodies and some coaxing.”
Charsha-Lindsey hopes that seeing his astounding transformation will encourage greater discussion about animal rescue and the amazing things it can accomplish.
Perhaps it’s natural that Lazarus, described by Charsha-Lindsey as “joyous” and “grateful,” came at his foster family on Labor Day. He’s spent his time there lounging outside in the mornings, sniffing the grass and getting warm in the sun.
“He’s slowly learning to dog,” Charsha-Lindsey says, adding that he’ll stay at the shelter until he’s ready for a forever home. “It provides us joy to show him new things every day, just to see the happiness on his face.” He’s started wanting affection from us and won’t go to bed unless he gets a hug and a smooch.”
