What everyone believed was a serious house invasion turned out to be a hilarious (and innocent) joke that even the deputies deployed to investigate it couldn’t stop laughing. All of this happened when they determined the invader was actually the owner’s dog!
Officers from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office responded at the scene after an 18-year-old male contacted 911 to report that someone was breaking into his house. The young man was apparently alone at home when his dogs began to bark incessantly. Then he began to hear strange noises coming from upstairs, so he gathered all of the dogs – save one – and took them upstairs to hide before phoning the cops.
“We got out and he’s all scared, believing there’s a prowler in his house,” Spencer Crum, a spokesperson for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, told The Dodo. “A couple of deputies stayed outside to search the exterior while others entered the house.”
For several minutes, the officers thoroughly investigated the residence, but there was no trace of a break-in, let alone an intruder. However, they were about to find out who the real culprit was!
“This scratching noise was noticed by one of the deputies outside the house,” Spencer Crum said. “He cast his light around the house and noticed a dog peering through a skylight on the roof.” “At that point, we abandoned all tactics and died laughing,” the deputy claimed.
They all found out what had transpired soon after. The enormous dog – a Great Dane – walked upstairs to investigate, but then he began to make a lot of noise, which alarmed the young owner and his other dogs. The owner was so terrified that he forgot to account for the ‘small’ Great Dane when he and the other dogs went into hiding. The Great Dane then used his strong legs to open the window in order to receive some fresh air.
“Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a home where a prowler had been reported. “They responded and promptly apprehended the perpetrator as he attempted to flee through an unlocked skylight,” the police announced on Facebook. Officer Crum, who has seen a lot, was taken aback by the result.
He responded, “I’ve been doing this work for 25 years, and there have been a lot of unusual calls.” “In his own house, a dog is mistaken for an intruder?” That’s quite unusual.”
