Ashley, a lovely pit bull, was discovered in horrible shape inside an abandoned house, and a New York firehouse decided to take her in until her rescuers could find her a home. They just fell in love with her and decided to adopt her after three days.
“‘It was bitterly cold outside.’ “We just raced and got her and said we’d figure out what we were going to do after we got her out of there,” one of the rescuers, Erica Mahnken, told CBC News. “Everyone is so ready to judge a dog, especially one that you don’t know where it comes from, what sort of person they are, or what kind of dog they are… It’s quite rewarding.”
From the moment they spotted Ashley, the New York City Fire Department station known as Fort Pitt grew fond of her. In a short time, the lovely dog had become a valued member of the crew, and she was given her own seat in the firetruck. Ashley is active on social media, with an Instagram account where you can keep up with her firefighting exploits.
Ashley was rescued by No More Pain, a non-profit organization based in New Jersey dedicated to rescuing and relocating people who are living in dangerous situations. The company, which is run by a four-person non-profit organization, has few resources and relies mainly on donations.
“We felt the moment we took her through those doors that she was supposed to be there,” Mahnken said. “Every single Fort Pitt firefighter fell in love with her right away, and she fell in love with them so much more.”
She was only intended to be there for a few days, but the group decided to adopt her and put her in the truck!
“I couldn’t have chosen a better home for our lovely girl, and I can’t express my gratitude to the FDNY enough for enabling Ash to join New York’s Bravest,” Mahnken said. “Her tail is wagging whenever she’s there, she’s incredibly sociable, and she jumps on everyone.”
