A South African family offered a shelter dog a home and their affection one day.
Years later, Kei returned the favor by saving her owner from a fatal bullet.
Robbers broke into the homes of residents in the African city of Benoni in early October.
One of them went straight to the owner of the house’s bedroom and shot him, while the other was about to deal with the older daughter when the household pet, a dog named Kei, got in the way.
She charged at the stranger with a ferocity that none of her owners had ever seen before, and the bleeding criminal was chased away.
After making his way down the stairs, the robber came across the second dog, Holly, a Biewer-Yorkshire terrier, and shot her.
In the kitchen, the man approached Kei again and pointed the gun at her snout.
The dog’s jaw was crushed by the gunshot. She couldn’t bark because of the agony and injuries, so she tried to get help by running to her neighbors.
When the gates were shut, Kei proceeded to the lake, where she frequently wandered with the owners to look for people.
After driving around the area for about one hour, the surviving family members discovered Kei lying on the ground at the water’s edge.
The animal was rushed to the emergency room. The dog miraculously lived, according to veterinarians.
Her tongue was seriously wounded, two teeth were knocked out, and the bones in her lower jaw were crushed by the bullet.
Kei was unable to eat on her own for several weeks and was fed through a tube.
The surgeons replaced the crushed pieces of the bone with a metal prosthetic once the dog was strong enough for surgery.
Later, the family thanked the city’s citizens for their support and financial assistance in a post on the SPCA shelter’s Facebook page. The townpeople covered the majority of the costs of treating the dog.
“We are grateful and touched by your thoughtfulness, which came at a time when we needed it the most. Thank you, and thank you to everyone who has helped Kei and our family,” the note concludes.
In commemoration of their second, deceased dog, Holly, the family chose to donate any remaining monies from the procedure to the Boksburg SPCA shelter.
The shelter’s management, for their part, expressed their support and gratitude to the affected family, as well as admiration for their former ward’s bravery.
“This is a fantastic illustration of how a homeless mutt was transformed into a hero in an instant.” Thousands of canines like Kei are waiting to be adopted in our shelters across the country. Take good care of your dogs, and we promise that they will thank you someday!”
