Shey, a 14-year-old tiny poodle, was given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in November 2017 for the saddest of explanations: his family was relocating and he wouldn’t be joining them.

“Shey is really kind and loves to be with people all the time,” Jessica Jorgenson, the rescue’s online content coordinator, told The Dodo.

Shey was picked up by somebody after 4 months at the shelter. The rescue provided for surgery and veterinary care for him since he had dental issues and had never been neutered. Only one of his teeth was still in good shape.

There wasn’t exactly a queue out the door of adopters eager to meet him as he was deaf, partially blind, and almost fully toothless.

“Shey was quite comfortable with Tristan from the start,” Jorgenson remarked.

When a little child named Tristan came in one night, none of that mattered. Shey was the ideal match for him and his mom, who was looking for a little, cuddly puppy.

Tristan sat down, ready to meet his new possible friend. Shey’s face lit up with sheer delight when the attendant placed him in Tristan’s lap.

“He took things slowly since he knew Shey couldn’t hear what was going on and might not be able to see things well,” Jorgenson explained. “All he was doing was showing respect for Shey’s abilities and limits.”

Tristan focused on every word as the adoption team detailed some of Shey’s particular needs, clearly anxious to help the adorable little puppy snuggling in his lap…

Jorgenson continued, “He was extremely considerate of Shey’s unique needs.” “Tristan is a wise young man who asks a bunch of questions,” says the narrator.

Tristan even took out his phone’s calendar and began noting when he’d need to take Shey to the veterinarian for future vaccinations while examining Shey’s medical history. He also informed the personnel about the private area he had created in his room for himself.

It was a no-brainer when I observed how ready the small boy was for a dog – and how responsible he was about adopting a senior animal.

Shey’s new favorite location is in Tristan’s arms now that he is at home with the family.

Tristan is doing everything he can to make up for the time Shey spent looking for a family after he was abandoned.

“Shey appears to be in a good mood,” Jorgenson observed. “Cuddling is his fave thing in the world, and he cuddled up to Tristan.”
