It’s awful to have to put a dog down. Their medical bills can be prohibitively expensive at times, and they may not be able to live comfortably or happily as a result of physical issues or injuries. Other times, their acts aren’t safe, or there isn’t a place for them, or there isn’t anybody to promote them. Typically, the vet team or sanctuary personnel must make difficult decisions in these situations.
Putting a pet to sleep, regardless of the reason, is a tough but frequently necessary decision. Those who have had to say goodbye to a companion dog understandably want them to be as comfortable as possible in their final days.
Not only do owners value the animals’ final moments, but veterinarians do as well.
An animal hospital in Alabama recently went viral for posting a cute thing they do for dogs just before they’re put down.
A snapshot of a container of Hersey Kiss chocolates was posted to Facebook by the Smiths Terminal Animal Medical Clinic. “Goodbye kisses” was written on the container. “This container is booked for our euthanasia appointments… because no dog should go to Heaven without enjoying wonderful chocolate,” they captioned the photo.
The statement was produced by Dr. Nicole Namie, one of three veterinarians at the hospital, according to a KPTV story. The photo was widely circulated, and many people liked it and talked about it, giving their own stories of how they treated their beloved dogs in their final days.
“It was truffled eggs and an early 15th bday pupcake for our Bonnie (west highland terrier) on her last day,” one individual wrote. Right before our veterinarian arrived, she was accompanied by her favorite, smoked salmon.”
“It’s been a year and a half since my buddy and I said our goodbyes. “I sent him off to eat cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets,” said another.
“My baby ate chocolate ice cream with banana and whipped lotion on her last night,” another person said. Her favorite food was banana, which she couldn’t live without.”
If you’re familiar with dogs, you’re probably aware that chocolate is not a risk-free food for them. “Yes, chocolate is dangerous to dogs,” according to VCA Hospitals. Chocolate intake, while seldom lethal, can cause serious sickness.”
Because dogs are unable to consume chocolate during their lifetimes, the pet hospital decided that giving them some before they crossed the rainbow bridge would be fitting.
