After refusing to move away from the yard of a Memphis, Tennessee, residence, Oliver was caught wandering. As animal control agents approached him, he jumped over the fence and out of the yard like it was a game. Finally, a humane trap was set up to capture him, and he was taken to Memphis Animal Services.
Oliver’s brand-new shelter buddies could tell he’d had a home or somebody caring for him at some point from the moment he arrived. He was a brilliant young man who appreciated food and bargains, knowing that if he listened and did his job correctly, he would be showered with them…
Katie Pemberton, the community interaction expert at Memphis Animal Services, told The Dodo, “I met him on the first day he came in, and he waited for me before I even notified him I had treats.” “Of course, once the food was delivered, he was much more ready to rest,” says the author. “The more he came to know me, the more he pressed up against the kennel bars to be caressed.”
“Our field supervisor stopped by his kennel in our ACO intake room the very first night he arrived up and watched him with his dish in his mouth,” Pemberton said. “She offered him more food, therefore, his charming tactic worked!” When he arrived at his permanent kennel, he kept doing it. For the most part, he had his bowl in his mouth.”
Someone from Oliver’s background could have taught him how to fetch his food dish as a fun little prank. It’s also conceivable he hadn’t eaten in a while and was afraid he wouldn’t be fed again if he lost sight of his food dish.
During his stay at the shelter, Oliver insisted on bringing his food dish with him everywhere he went, which the staff found hilarious. They started photographing his habits and sharing them on social media, and the rest of the world quickly fell in love with Oliver…
“After Oliver’s photos went viral, we received an abnormally big number of queries about him– I wish each dog had as many people interested in adopting them,” Pemberton added.
Oliver’s preoccupation with bowls attracted a lot of attention, and his permanent family eventually showed up for him…
Oliver was adopted and transferred to his new family, and he was ecstatic when he saw that he was placed on their “dinner plate.”
