Following the Russian invasion, more than 3 million Ukrainians have fled their nation. However, one woman is doing the unthinkable and returning to an active battle zone… To find and save those who have been abandoned – the animals.
Since the [w.ar] began, several people have been compelled to flee or stay behind with their pets. Marina risked her life to continue her work at the “Shelter Friend Ukraine” after returning to Ukraine to safeguard the animals left behind after taking her children to Poland.
Marina explained, “I’ve taken in hundreds of dogs and have seven nurseries full of them.” I’m currently rescuing any animals that people abandon or that I encounter on the streets. We are overburdened, but we continue to assist.
Marina is concerned that she will not have enough materials to care for her rescued animals. Marina is unable to obtain food, medicine, or bedding for the dogs because she does not have access to these items. She’s also unwell as a result of the stress.
Marina stated, “When the conflict is over, I will first go to Poland to thank the Polish people who are caring for my children.” I’m going to take my kids home and find homes for the hundreds of animals in my shelter who are in desperate need of homes.
Then, as I anticipated, I would realize my dream of building kennels with warmth at my shelter for many animals to come.
Marina, I’m grateful you’re doing what you’re doing. It takes a unique person to care for these animals and put her life on the line to do so. Thank you so much for taking such good care of these adorable infants. Please keep yourself safe.
My heart breaks for her and for all others dedicated to caring for animals who are unwittingly caught up in these heinous situations.
