After being in labor for 24 hours, a pregnant mother dog was dumped at the Boone Area Humane Society.
She had an emergency C-section and pas.sed out twice afterward, but she was finally stabilized. She got a blood transfusion and was closely monitored in the ICU at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
“The physicians at ISU also told us this gal is an elderly dog and has had multiple litters of puppies in the past,” the Boone Area Humane Society wrote on Facebook…
“She should have been in her golden years,” says the narrator, “but she was reared and then dumped when her labor got difficult.”
Mama dog gave birth to 21 pups, but despite the best efforts of doctors, they have all died.
The puppies were all underdeveloped, and there was no way they could have gotten enough nutrition in the womb with 21 other puppies.
Ruthie, the mother dog, is getting better every day, eating on her own and rising to go outside. She has a lovely demeanor and has been released from the hospital to be with her new foster home, where she will continue to be rehabilitated.
Meanwhile, the Humane Society is doing everything they can to seek charges against the person who abandoned Ruthie, but they believe it will be a long battle owing to Iowa’s inadequate animal protection laws.
