Just several months ago, a dog who had been chewing twigs and rocks had a nice outcome.

Alex, a 43-pound Weimaraner, was found wandering the streets of New Orleans and sent to Vermillion Parish’s Rabies Animal Control.
Alex was so malnourished that Deanna Theis, associate director of the Southern Animal Foundation, was taken aback when she saw a picture of him.
She knew he wouldn’t survive unless he was yanked from the refuge right away, so she did just that.
X-Rays indicated that Alex had been so hungry that he had eaten rocks and twigs to fill his stomach while undergoing medical exams.
In the beginning, his health was precarious. Alex’s acute malnutrition resulted in a catastrophic setback when his stomach flipped in response to the nutrients he was receiving.
He needed emergency surgery right away to remove the foreign items and treat the perilous condition, but the brave dog made it through.
He was placed in foster care with Diane Lundeen after he had healed sufficiently. She already has two Weimaraners at home, and she fell head over heels for Alex the moment she met him. He fell in love with her as well, gaining ten pounds in his first week with her.
Diane knew she couldn’t let go of the dog whose eyes were so haunting when they first met 4 months later. Now that he’s found a permanent home with Lundeen and his new siblings, those same eyes are bright and full of joy.
Alex is smiling in each picture he’s in right now.
He’s about 80 pounds now, according to Lundeen: “He has good color in his gums, bright eyes, and he doesn’t moan when he sits down.” He exudes a wonderful sense of excitement for life.”
