Janine is the founder of the Animal Rescue Society and a college student. She hoped to save Watson when she first saw him in the park, frail and gaunt.
She read the contrary in his eyes after spending some time with him. He’s had enough of battling.
Watson was cared for by veterinarians for several days, but his prognosis was not good. A big malignant growth was found on the hind limb.
However, it appears that the sickness has already spread throughout the body.
The only thing that could be done for Watson was to provide him with comfort and care in his final days.
Janine chose to stay with Watson instead of providing him with a cozy cage with blankets for the night.
“I had a sense he’d get worse the next day.” I didn’t want to abandon him at a time when he most needed my help.”
Janine gathered all of the cages’ blankets and bedding and placed them in the washing room.
She sat down on the floor with Watson and spent the entire night petting him and encouraging him with nice words.
This may have been the only time in Watson’s life that he spent a night in the arms of a loving person.
“He cuddled up to me like a baby and slept like a baby.” I dozed off and awoke with tears in my eyes.”
Watson refused to eat or drink the following morning.
He twisted and fell in circles.
Janine drove him to the vet and gave him a long hug before he died.
We’ll never know if Watson had any knowledge of human kindness prior to his redemption.
Even if that night was the only one filled with tenderness and love, Janine feels better knowing that she was there for him when he needed her the most.
“My heart is shattered. But there was nothing I could do.”
