In Minnesota, a three-legged cancer-stricken dog saved an infant otter by leaping into a river to save it.
Gus the Goldendoodle rushed into the St. Croix River to save the younger river otter, according to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota’s Facebook page.
Gus has been battling cancer, according to Fox News affiliate KMSP. His owner had given up hope that he’d be able to swim again after his back right leg was severed in February due to the discovery of malignancies.
But that didn’t stop him from rescuing a young otter on April 17, according to CBS News affiliate WCCO.
Gus’ owner Cleo Young and her two granddaughters, according to KMSP, watched as the canine swam out approximately 50 feet into the ocean before returning to the land and dropping the child otter at their feet.
According to WCCO, Young bathed the otter covered in sand and rushed it to a flora and fauna rehabilitation center.
“The otter is far too young to be in the water,” the crew explained, “but it must remain in the den with its mother.” “The otter has been admitted for rehabilitation because no one knows where the den is or how far the small man traveled.”
The first 36 hours were concerning, according to the flora and fauna police, because he was bloodless to the touch and they weren’t sure if he was suffering from pneumonia.
The otter, though, is doing well now, according to the crew.
He used to be moved to any other rehabilitation center for better care, according to WCCO.
The natural world crew added, “Kudos to Gus and his high-quality owners, Cleo and John, for saving this younger otter’s life.”
