Junior Cook, a boat captain from Cross Keys, Manitoba, was drifting by the little Canadian isle when he heard noises coming from the desolate area. He returned the next day, concerned about the cries he had heard. When he said seven puppies roaming around and crying on the island, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Concerned, he phoned Norway House Animal Rescue, which quickly responded. The organization is used to receiving calls about abandoned pets and kittens. “This is not an unique incident; it occurs on a daily basis in Manitoba and around the world,” the rescuer writes. The rescue transports stray animals to shelters where they can be adopted.
“He and his friend went out and it was getting dark already, and they detected some noises on the island,” Deb Vandekerkhove, the rescue’s director, said CBC. They grabbed their binoculars could not see anything but dark shadows and heard a lot of crying. They first assumed it was wolves.”
Food was supplied to the pups for the first few days until transportation could be arranged.
The food was provided by the rescue, and Cook delivered it to the puppies. The ravenous dogs devoured a full bag of food in a single day. They were obviously hungry, and whenever they sighted Cook’s boat, they would run. They began to warm up to individuals gradually. “They’re becoming more comfortable around people, which is excellent because they were afraid of them when they first arrived.”
The abandoned puppies were rescued and transported 330 miles to Winnipeg, where they will be available for adoption.
“They’ll be like the Gilligan’s Island gang – four boys and three girls,” Vandekerhove says. The puppies were given names based on characters from a popular 1960s television show.
Naturally, it took a few days to figure out which characteristics each puppy possessed in order to match a name. Skipper, Gilligan, Mary-Anne, The Professor, Ginger, Lovey, and Mr. Howell are all looking for permanent residences. “They are currently receiving medical treatment for lice, tapeworm, and malnutrition and will be placed up for adoption once they are healthy,” Winnipeg Pet Rescue stated. Norway House Animal Rescue is fighting for the puppies who have been abandoned. They are seeking public assistance in locating the cruel individual who abandoned the puppies on the island to perish.
