It was the worst case of abuse NorCal Bully Breed Rescue had ever encountered.
Chase the Chihuahua and his cocker spaniel buddy, Buddy, were in so much suffering from fleas and untreated skin illnesses that they could scarcely stand.
Chase had lost all of his fur and was suffering with skin so red and inflamed that he didn’t even recognize a dog after years of being kept inside a home with little attention or care. Buddy’s fur was matted and caked with years’ worth of urine and feces, causing ulcers all over his body. They were both blind and deaf to a large extent.
Despite this, the 12-year-old pals had each other.
Buddy and Chase were given up to a shelter in Martinez, California, in late October since their owner was moving. The dogs were transported to a foster home through NorCal Bully Breed Rescue because they were likely to be killed at the public shelter.
Rescuers immediately began treating the dogs’ varied health issues, including fleas, skin illnesses, intestinal parasites, and overgrown nails. They’re also assisting them in recovering from nutritional deficiencies caused by years of poor nourishment.
Despite the odds, Chase and Buddy’s foster mother, Kellie Murphy, told The Dodo that they only have affection for people.
“They’re extremely lovely and shockingly trusting to us,” Murphy remarked. “They’re happiest when they’re cuddled on someone’s lap – presumably because they’ve never had that before.” Because they can’t see or hear, it’s reassuring to them.”
Chase has also been diagnosed with lymphoma, for which he will get treatment over the next six months. However, in the short time they’ve been in Murphy’s care, the dogs have already begun to gain strength.
For the time being, the two senior friends are staying with Murphy’s family, which includes her husband, 2-year-old child, and Chihuahua-daschund mix. New sweaters, warming beds, and a yard to explore are all nice changes for them, but even in the safety of their new place, they stay close together.
“They’re quite close,” Murphy explained. “No matter where they are, they always sit exactly next to each other, touching.” If we go outside with one of them, the other will wail until his companion comes back.”
Meanwhile, the canines’ original owner is being investigated for animal abuse by local authorities.
“We’re hopeful they’ll be adoptable shortly if everything goes well over the next several months,” Murphy added. “If not, they are welcome to stay with me for as long as they wish.”
